Bonfire’s Glass Tile Turns Garbage Into Gems
In the hands of Bend artists Mare Schelz and Jamie “Twig”
Branch, shards of broken glass enjoy a remarkable transformation
from trash into beautiful, jewel-like Bonfire Glass Tile.
And latetly, Bonfire’s handcrafted, art-deco tiles
have been gaining a reputation locally — and nationally
— for their artistic look and feel, as well as for
their environmentally friendly qualities.
Schelz and Branch were recently commissioned to design and
produce custom martini glass tiles for the new Martini Bar
in The Old Mill. The tiles are used as sink backsplashes,
which are backlit resulting in a dramatic illumination.
“We really like the way they personalized the Martini
Bar,” says Jim Bendis, Bendistillery owner. “They
add something a little extra cool — an ambiance in
the bathrooms and a little bit of soft light.”
Several Bend homes also incorporate Bonfire tiles in their
kitchen and bath designs. Builder Michael Kenna and his
wife Tracy installed tiles with a wave motif in the custom-tiled
shower of their home. Again, the tiles are backlit using
rope light.
“We were trying to make our house as interesting as
possible, and we instantly fell in love with the Bonfire
tiles,” says Tracy Kenna. “They’ve become
the focal point of the room, and we get so many compliments
on them.”
Bonfire’s distinctive designs also impressed the editor
of the web-based title publication, AboutGlassTile.com.
He included the company in a recent article focused on North
American tile manufacturers’ environmental practices.
Bonfire is the only small, artisan manufacturer included
— the others literally stamp out tiles in large factories.
Bonfire Tiles are now available through showrooms in AZ,
CA, CO, CT, ID, OR, MT, RI and WA. Locally, Bonfire tiles
are showcased in Austin Tile & Marble, Cement Elegance
and Moon Cabinetry displays.
